Time for a party with the big cats
chris.havergal@cambridge-news.co.uk
TIGERS may come to tea but yesterday a big cat had a party thrown just for one tigress.
Families flocked to Shepreth Wildlife Park for Amba's 11th birthday.
And there were a host of treats lined up for the popular tiger, including a visit from a member of the "Amber Army".
That came in the form of Cambridge United defender Anthony Tonkin, who launched footballs into Amba's enclosure for her to play with.
The event is now in its seventh year and has raised more than £10,000 for conservation charity 21st Century Tiger in that time.
Organiser Rebecca Willers said she hoped yesterday's celebrations raised more than last year's total of £1,100.
Visitors hoped to share in a piece of special "tiger cake" and were kept amused by fun and games, face paintings, and the park mascots.
Tiger expert Dr Tom Maddox, who works on projects which the event helps to fund, gave a talk on where the money was going.
Rebecca said the party had had a great turnout despite rain in the morning.
She said: "I think it shows that, as time goes on, people are realising the significance of what's happening to tigers.
"They will be extinct in 20 years' time if nothing is done to save them and I think that is starting to hit home."
Rebecca will continue the celebrations next month by doing a 10km swimathon for 21st Century Tiger. To sponsor her, visit www.justgiving. com/tiger10kmswi m.

Sangat jauh ketimbang Malaysia 20 dolar AS per hektar.
