Mark Reed, the zoo's director, told Sedgwick County commissioners this morning that he is hopeful the new Tiger Trek will boost zoo attendance well over 600,000 visitors this year. The highest annual attendance so far has been 593,428 in 2007, when the zoo opened its penguin exhibit. The second highest year was 2004 when the gorilla exhibit opened and 591,687 people came to the zoo. Last year, the zoo's attendance was 584,076. Because more people are staying close to home on their holidays and vacations this year, the zoo expects to do well, Reed said. "May is always a big month for us because of field trips," said Christan Baumer, spokeswoman for the zoo. "I don't know yet if we will beat the penguin grand opening.
